Mortenson Scholarship

Dorothy Mortenson (1912-1999) was an avid gardener, a lifelong educator, a 40-year resident of Montclair, and an active member of UUCM’s Beloved Community.  Dorothy (Dot), a member of the League of Women Voters, the United Nations Association, the National Education Association, and the New Jersey Education Association, believed in the power of education.

Of the many amazing things about Dorothy, it is important to uplift her incredible capacity for gracious generosity. Education was one of the supremely important forces in Dorothy’s life. She recognized it as an invaluable gift that had been given to her, and she saw it as a great gift that she could give back to life.  She established the Mortenson scholarship in 1978 in memory of her husband, Laurence A. Mortenson, who with Dorothy, was also a teacher at Montclair High School.
