During the last several weeks, we have sung the hymn “Woyaya” in each of our Sunday services. For those of you who missed it, here are the lyrics:
We are going
Heaven knows where we are going
But we know within
And we will get there
Heaven knows how we will get there
But we know we will
It will be hard, we know
And the road will be muddy and rough
But we’ll get there
Heaven knows how we will get there
But we know we will
These words have resonated with me, as they seem very appropriate to our time. The hymn is based on a song that was recorded in 1971 by the Ghanaian band Osibisa, and later covered by Art Garfunkel, Sweet Honey in the Rock, and others (you can find some of these versions on YouTube – just search for “Woyaya”). Of course we know that all great art appeals to a large variety of people, but I am still amazed when I think of the unique circumstances, location, and time in which the song was written – a reality quite different from ours, yet clearly an experience we can share.
